Steering Column Buying Guide
The steering system links the driver's input at the steering wheel to the front wheels. This guide covers steering columns and wheels, racks, and the power steering pump.
Steering Column
The steering column is the tube assembly that houses the steering shaft, mounts the steering wheel, and carries the combination switches (turn signal, wiper, cruise control) and ignition switch. It incorporates a collapsible section that compresses in a frontal collision to protect the driver.
Critical safety note: Never use a steering column from a vehicle that was in a frontal collision without confirming the collapsible section is intact and undamaged. A previously collapsed section will not provide designed crush protection in a subsequent crash.
Matching: Columns are highly trim-specific. Tilt vs. non-tilt, telescoping vs. fixed, column-shift vs. floor-shift, and the presence of cruise control and audio controls are all column variants. Match your replacement exactly or expect to lose features. The ignition switch and lock cylinder are typically separate from the column.
Steering Wheel
The steering wheel is vehicle and trim-specific, particularly when it incorporates an airbag, audio controls, heated-wheel function, or paddle shifters. Important: the steering wheel airbag module (horn pad) is a separate SRS component — do not transfer or install an airbag from a different vehicle. If purchasing a used wheel with an intact airbag module, follow all SRS safety procedures.
The clock spring (spiral cable) in the steering column — not part of the wheel itself — must be in good condition to maintain the airbag and controls connection as the wheel turns. Replace it whenever the steering wheel is removed.
Steering Rack
The steering rack (rack and pinion assembly) is the central link between your steering wheel and the front wheels. When it develops leaks, excessive play, or noise, the whole assembly typically needs replacement.
What's included: the complete rack and pinion housing with internal pinion gear, rack bar, and end bushings. Some listings include inner tie rod ends. Not included: outer tie rod ends, adjusting sleeves, steering column shaft, power steering pump, or fluid.
Hydraulic vs. electric: Hydraulic power steering (HPS) racks are purely mechanical/hydraulic and straightforward to replace. Electric power steering (EPS) racks may have the motor integrated and can require programming to your vehicle's calibration. If your vehicle has EPS, confirm the replacement includes the motor and whether programming is required.
Core exchange: Many remanufactured racks are sold on a core exchange basis — return your old rack within the specified window to receive a core deposit refund.
A front-end alignment is mandatory after steering rack replacement — removing the rack disturbs toe settings.
Power Steering Pump / Motor
Hydraulic pumps pressurize fluid to assist steering. Common failures include fluid leaks (seals), whining noise (internal wear), and low pressure (pump failure). Confirm the pump has the correct reservoir mount and pressure port orientation for your vehicle — even within the same engine family, configurations differ. Flush and replace the power steering fluid when installing any pump.
Electric power steering (EPS) motors are integral to the steering column or rack on many modern vehicles. These units may require calibration or programming after installation — particularly on vehicles where the EPS module stores torque sensor calibration data.
Always perform a front-end alignment after replacing a steering rack.
Flush and refill the power steering fluid whenever you replace a pump or rack.
Match steering columns and wheels exactly by trim — feature content (tilt, cruise, audio, airbag) varies.
Follow SRS safety procedures whenever a steering wheel airbag or clock spring is involved.

ShopEarl.com is a network of American auto part suppliers - salvage yards, aftermarket vendors, and powertrain remanufacturers.
Our mission is to make finding the right auto part easy, affordable, and environmentally friendly by giving quality used parts a second life and keeping them out of landfills.
We use a comprehensive vehicle fitment database that matches parts to specific makes, models, years, and engine types.
For critical components like engines and transmissions, we also require VIN verification for your vehicle to ensure an exact match. The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) contains specific information about your vehicle's configuration that helps identify the exact parts it needs.
If you're ever unsure about fitment, our team is available to help verify compatibility before you make a purchase.
ShopEarl.com accepts the following payment methods:
- Major credit and debit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express
- Affirm

- Apple Pay
- Google Pay
All payment data is encrypted using TLS technology. We never see or store your full payment information—only a secure token provided by our processor to complete your purchase.
ShopEarl.com offers free shipping within the continental United States. Shipping times can vary depending on shipping methods, and ‘unbolted’ used parts typically ship a day faster than ‘yard’ parts that have to be professionally dismantled from the vehicle first. You’ll receive email and text notifications every step of the way.
Delivery to commercial locations is always free, but larger parts that ship freight may incur surcharges if they are delivered to a residential address. You can always ship these for free to a repair facility or our team can help find a nearby commercial address for local pickup.
At the moment, we don’t offer expedited shipping options. However, we’re always looking for ways to improve our services, and we hope to offer faster shipping options in the future.
All parts come with a minimum 30 day return window from the date your part arrives. See full return policy for all the details.
A core charge is a refundable fee charged when you buy a part that can be rebuilt or remanufactured, like an engine, alternator, or transmission. It works like a deposit:
- You pay the core charge upfront when you buy the part.
- After installing the new part, you return the old part (the “core”) to the seller.
This system encourages recycling and helps manufacturers refurbish used parts instead of making new ones from scratch.
Used parts are OEM auto parts professionally dismantled by certified auto recyclers.
Remanufactured parts are used OEM parts that have been completely disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt with new components where necessary. They're tested to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, and often come with warranties similar to new parts.
New parts are new, aftermarket components that have never been installed on a vehicle.
