Buying Guide
Tail Light Buying Guide
Beyond the main headlights, vehicles carry a supporting cast of lighting assemblies that serve specific safety and signaling functions. This guide covers tail lights, parking and bumper lights, and the high-mounted stop light. Most are inexpensive to replace, but matching trim, side, technology, and connector is essential to stay legal and functional.
A cracked or clouded tail light is both a safety hazard and an invitation for a fix-it ticket. Used OEM tail light assemblies offer factory fit and finish at a fraction of new aftermarket prices.
What's Included
The tail light lens and housing assembly. On most used units, bulb sockets are included but bulbs are not. Wiring pigtail connectors are typically attached to the assembly. Not included: any wiring harness beyond the pigtail, mounting hardware, or rear bumper.
Inner vs. Outer — Know Which Section You Need
Many vehicles have two-piece tail light systems: an outer (quarter panel-mounted) section and an inner (trunk lid or tailgate-mounted) section. These are separate parts with different part numbers. Verify which section is damaged before ordering.
Key Compatibility Points
Year, Make, Model, and Trim — some body style refreshes within a generation change tail light design
Body style — 2-door, 4-door, wagon, and hatchback variants often have different tail lights even on the same nameplate
Left vs. Right — always specify driver side or passenger side
LED vs. Halogen
OEM tail lights are designed for a specific bulb type. If your vehicle uses LED tail lights and you replace with a halogen assembly (or vice versa), the turn signal flasher rate may malfunction and the wiring connectors will differ. Match the technology of your original.
Lens Condition
Check the lens carefully: cracks that penetrate through the lens allow water ingress and will cause rapid bulb failure and corrosion inside the housing. Surface scratches and cloudiness are typically cosmetic and can often be restored with a polishing kit if the housing is otherwise sound.
Installation
Most tail lights are held by 2–4 bolts or push-clips accessible from inside the trunk or cargo area. Disconnect the battery before working on lighting circuits to avoid shorts or airbag-related issues on some vehicles.
The front parking/bumper light assembly typically combines the parking (position) light, front turn signal, and sometimes the daytime running light in a single housing. These mount in or around the front bumper and are often damaged in minor frontal impacts.
Key considerations: Match the assembly to your exact year, make, model, and trim — even a slight model year refresh can change the mounting tabs and connector. Bulbs are usually not included. Verify left vs. right on asymmetrical assemblies.
The CHMSL (center high-mounted stop light, or third brake light) must meet specific height and color requirements. On hatchbacks and SUVs it's often mounted in or on the rear glass, in the spoiler, or on the cab of a pickup. LED versions are sealed assemblies that replace as a unit; halogen versions allow bulb replacement. Match the housing shape and mounting location to your vehicle.
Always verify left vs. right on any asymmetrical assembly
Check whether the harness connector shape matches before purchase
LED assemblies for halogen applications (and vice versa) typically don't share the same wiring connectors
Cracked lenses allow water ingress — inspect any used assembly for clear, intact lenses
Disconnect the battery before working on lighting circuits

ShopEarl.com is a network of American auto part suppliers - salvage yards, aftermarket vendors, and powertrain remanufacturers.
Our mission is to make finding the right auto part easy, affordable, and environmentally friendly by giving quality used parts a second life and keeping them out of landfills.
We use a comprehensive vehicle fitment database that matches parts to specific makes, models, years, and engine types.
For critical components like engines and transmissions, we also require VIN verification for your vehicle to ensure an exact match. The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) contains specific information about your vehicle's configuration that helps identify the exact parts it needs.
If you're ever unsure about fitment, our team is available to help verify compatibility before you make a purchase.
ShopEarl.com accepts the following payment methods:
- Major credit and debit cards, including Visa, MasterCard, and American Express
- Affirm

- Apple Pay
- Google Pay
All payment data is encrypted using TLS technology. We never see or store your full payment information—only a secure token provided by our processor to complete your purchase.
ShopEarl.com offers free shipping within the continental United States. Shipping times can vary depending on shipping methods, and ‘unbolted’ used parts typically ship a day faster than ‘yard’ parts that have to be professionally dismantled from the vehicle first. You’ll receive email and text notifications every step of the way.
Delivery to commercial locations is always free, but larger parts that ship freight may incur surcharges if they are delivered to a residential address. You can always ship these for free to a repair facility or our team can help find a nearby commercial address for local pickup.
At the moment, we don’t offer expedited shipping options. However, we’re always looking for ways to improve our services, and we hope to offer faster shipping options in the future.
All parts come with a minimum 30 day return window from the date your part arrives. See full return policy for all the details.
A core charge is a refundable fee charged when you buy a part that can be rebuilt or remanufactured, like an engine, alternator, or transmission. It works like a deposit:
- You pay the core charge upfront when you buy the part.
- After installing the new part, you return the old part (the “core”) to the seller.
This system encourages recycling and helps manufacturers refurbish used parts instead of making new ones from scratch.
Used parts are OEM auto parts professionally dismantled by certified auto recyclers.
Remanufactured parts are used OEM parts that have been completely disassembled, cleaned, and rebuilt with new components where necessary. They're tested to meet or exceed original equipment specifications, and often come with warranties similar to new parts.
New parts are new, aftermarket components that have never been installed on a vehicle.
